1804 List Inductee Michèle Stephenson Wins NAACP Image Award

Documentary filmmaker Michèle Stephenson, who is among the inductees on this year’s 1804 List of Haitian-American Changemakers, has won an NAACP Image Award for her book,
Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life – co-authored with Joe Brewster and Hilary Beard. The book won in category of Outstanding Literary Work – Instructional. Stephenson and Brewster have won numerous awards for their documentary, “American Promise,” which traces the lives of two boys who attend an elite private school together.

The film, 13 years in the making, has won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award at Sundance, The Grand Jury Award at the Documentary Film Festival and Best Documentary from the African American Film Critics Association.
