Cécile McLorin Salvant is a bright new star among jazz vocalists. She has been variously described as a successor to Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Born in Miami of a French-Guadeloupean mother and a Haitian father, she studied classical music before turning to jazz and winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk competition.
